Puck has his eyes set on Shelby, and his feelings for her lead to his rendition of “Hot for Teacher.” Will’s excited afterward, but Rachel questions the subject matter. Puck replies he just digs Van Halen. Puck pursues Shelby and brings her a pumpkin when the cafeteria runs out of apples. He tells her that he has fallen in love with her and gives her reasons why they should be together, one of which is Beth needing a father. He wants them being together as a family, but Shelby brushes him off, saying she’ll lose her job and that he’ll eventually get over his infatuation for her.

Sue plays dirty in the election campaign and puts ads saying Burt has a baboon heart. Kurt confronts Sue about it, and Sue lashes out that campaigns are about fighting dirty after all.

Will and Shelby’s choir are ready to compete for Sectionals. Both advisors are getting along pretty well, but the students aren’t. While Rachel and Santana throw insults at each other, Will and Shelby call their groups to the stage and give them a new assignment. It’s New Directions versus Trouble Tones, and they are going to face off in a “friendly” mash-off competition.

Finn suggests that they sing Hall & Oates since they are known for sticking together. Blaine thinks it’s a great idea when Finn suggests giving the solo to Rory, but Rory is hesitant as he’s not sure whether he’s ready for the part. When Finn and Rory run into Santana and Brittany, they engage in a little trash talk. It doesn’t go well and Finn proposes a game of dodge ball. As the game begins, the two choirs mash up as well with the songs “Hit Me with Your Best Shot / One Way or Another.” It’s a showdown between Santana and Finn, where Santana wins.

Santana agrees to play fair with New Directions when a majority vote elects Mercedes as Trouble Tones president. However, after running into Finn and apologizing, with a string of insults about him, Finn retorts back and calls her a coward for not admitting to everyone that she’s in love with Brittany.

During the school council presidential debate, Kurt talks about refusing to be bullied or let anyone be bullied. When it’s Rachel’s turn, she withdraws and instead urges everyone to vote for Kurt, stressing that he’s the only candidate who never attacked his opponents. Afterward, Rachel tells Kurt to hug and make up.

Meanwhile, Santana is called into Sue’s office and is surprised to see Will and Burt in there as well. Will has the number of a therapist, and Burt offers to talk to her parents since he’s gone through the same experience with Kurt. Reggie, another opponent, has given an advance copy of his most recent campaign, which addresses Santana’s sexuality. Santana rushes out of the office crying.

The New Directions take the stage for their mash-up of “I Can’t Go for That / You Make My Dreams.” It’s not so bad, but it’s not quite good either to win the competition. The Trouble Tones hit back with their “Rumour Has It / Someone Like You.” Later on, when Santana sees Finn whispering something to Rachel, she confronts and slaps him. Now everyone’s going to know about her because of him.
