Glee celebrates Valentine’s Day this week. With old and new flames, the show promises the best Valentine’s Day ever.
For their assignment this week, Will challenges the New Directions to perform what they believe is the world’s greatest love song. While some are excited and inspired for the assignment, others are sad as they are reminded of the fact that they have no love life. McKinley High hosts a Valentine’s dance and Santana and Brittany decide to show up as a couple. Rumor has it that the two will share an intimate kiss. E! Online said that it is going to be “sweet and it’s romantic and it will satisfy fans.”
Artie and Rory compete to win Sugar’s heart. They shower her with romantic gifts, kind words and utmost attention as both guys want to take her to the dance. Artie will sing Mario’s “Let Me Love You” for her. On the other hand, Rory performs Michael Buble’s “Home.” Sugar certainly enjoys the attention she’s getting. Who will she choose?
If acting sweet and singing for her isn’t enough, Sam tries to convince Mercedes to break up with her boyfriend, Shane. Chord Overstreet told the media that “there’s a lot of love and a little bit of heartbreak in the episode.” Whose heart will Mercedes break? She will be singing Whitney Houston’s version of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.”
Finn and Rachel announce their engagement to the glee club. While majority of the members disapprove, two members are surprisingly supportive. Meanwhile, Will and Emma get into a big fight. Can they still celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Max Adler returns to the show as Dave Karofsky. Is it a coincidence that Kurt receives balloons and a note from a secret admirer just in time for the bully’s return? Despite his busy schedule, Darren Criss (Blaine) will also be appearing in this episode. It now makes us wonder if the “gorillagram” or the messenger dressed in a gorilla suit delivering Kurt’s sweet nothings is either of the two.
Aside from comebacks, there will also be debuts. Glee Project winner, Samuel Larsen finally appears on the show, not as Puck’s cousin as previously reported, but as a new non-conformist student named Joe Hart. On his debut, Larsen will be joining Overstreet and Riley in performing “Stereo Hearts” by Gym Class Heroes and Adam Levine.
Rachel’s dads are also featured on the show after they learn about their teenage daughter’s engagement. Portrayed by Jeff Goldblum and Brian Stokes Mitchell, they pay a surprise visit to McKinley High. The couple seems supportive and even offers to throw a celebratory family dinner. The Berry dads will be singing “You’re the Top” from the musical Anything Goes.
Steady lovebirds Mike and Tina will be performing Nat King Cole’s L-O-V-E. This song is memorable for Harry Shum Jr. because this was his audition song. This episode also features a mash-up of two different songs entitled “Cherish” by The Association and Madonna, which will be sung by Quinn, Mercedes, Joe and Sam. Blaine, Kurt and Mercedes will also perform The B-52′s “Love Shack.”
The song “I Will Always Love You” will have a deeper meaning because of legendary singer Whitney Houston’s death on February 11, 2012, a few days before the airing of “Heart.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, Glee producers had been planning to add a last-minute tribute to the 48-year-old singer.
Before the 2012 Grammys started, Riley shared with E! her experience in covering Houston’s songs and her unexpected meeting with her during a pre-Grammy party last February 9, 2012. “Whitney’s music meant so very much to me,” the young actress said. “I was very very choked up when I heard about her passing,” she added.
When Riley met Houston, she said she was nervous and didn’t know if she should approach the singer because she is an icon and an inspiration to her. She came up to her and thanked her for allowing them to use her music on the show. Houston asked her what show she was on and when Riley told her she was on Glee, the singer rubbed her hand and gave her a sweet “Oh, you’re welcome” and “God bless you.”
It was said that show’s creator Ryan Murphy has been convincing Riley to cover the Houston song but she kept on having second thoughts because according to her, the song is close to her heart and it is vocally challenging. “I went for it and it’s very, I guess, befitting that we’re doing it this Tuesday. We were celebrating her in life when we recorded and now we’re celebrating her legacy,” Riley said.
Don’t miss Glee’s Valentine episode on February 14, 2012 and find out how the show pays tribute to Whitney Houston.
